Is Allie's Rhode Island's Best Donut?

Updated: Mar 10, 2019

If you search for best donuts in Rhode Island, you'll see Allie's pop up on the top of various lists over and over again...but I tried to ignore the hype, go into it with no expectations - be an unbiased judge.

When I rolled into the parking lot of Allie's on Saturday morning, it was just before 7am and there was barely a parking space available. I walked in and the queue, of about 15 people, snaked around the small customer area until it reached the door.  The scent of fried dough filled the air as customer after customer ordered multiple dozens of various donuts. Through the donut display case I saw racks filled with donuts, on deck to replace the quickly depleting supply. Everyone in line was friendly and all seemed equally excited to take their turn at the front of the line.

When it was finally my opportunity, I stepped up and decided to order a half dozen of whatever the employee recommended.  They had a wide variety of traditional donuts, so she turned and looked slightly befuddled trying to figure out which ones to choose. The customer being helped next to me chimed in with what she recommended and they collaborated to give me a honey glazed, Boston cream, sprinkles, chocolate cake, glazed cruller, and maple frosted.

When it came time to taste them, my plan was to eat one and then share the rest. After the first bite of the honey glazed that plan quickly changed to a need to taste all of them. I followed the glazed with a bite of the multiple colored jimmies donut. It was also unbelievably delicious. The Boston cream was next, and again I was in my happy place. I couldn't stop! I took a giant bite of the cruller then the chocolate cake. The scent of the maple frosted dominated the others in the box. I'm neutral on maple, so I could take it or leave it, but I imagine if you love real maple syrup or maple candy, the maple frosted would be real winner. I tried to will my self to stop, but I had to go back for a second bite of the glazed...then a third. I bounced around from donut to donut, eating far more than I wanted, but not feeling bad about it at all. I think that's a sign of a good donut. The honey glazed definitely won my award for favorite. Conclusion: Allie's is definitely worth the hype. If you are anywhere near Rhode Island, you must go.
